Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3 (Tuesday). It has been an outstanding season for both RCB and PBKS, who are yet to win an IPL trophy.
Here, we look at three records that could be broken during the final:
Gujarat Titans (GT) scored 214/4 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2023 final — the highest total by a team in an IPL final. Despite that, GT lost as the match was reduced to 15 overs in the second innings due to rain, and CSK chased down 171 in 15 overs to win their fifth title.
PBKS have crossed the 200-run mark eight times this season, while RCB have done it on four occasions. There’s a strong possibility that GT’s record of the highest total in an IPL final could be broken on June 3. The 2025 final will be played in Ahmedabad, where PBKS recently chased down Mumbai Indians (MI)’s total of 203 with an over to spare.
The record for the highest successful run chase in an IPL final belongs to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who chased down 200 against PBKS in 2014. That record, too, could be in danger during the RCB-PBKS final.
Shane Watson (117* for CSK against SRH in 2018) and Wriddhiman Saha (115* for PBKS against KKR in 2014) are the only players to have scored centuries in an IPL final. With several in-form top-order batters on both sides, Watson’s record for the highest individual score in a final could be under threat.
Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni have five IPL titles each as captain with MI and CSK respectively, while Gautam Gambhir has two with KKR. Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Hardik Pandya, David Warner, and Shreyas Iyer each have one title.
However, none have won an IPL title with two different teams — something Iyer could achieve on June 3. Iyer led KKR to the title last season, and now has the chance to create history if PBKS lift their maiden trophy under his captaincy.
