Gujarat Titans’ ten-wicket historic win against Delhi Capitals, on May 18 (Sunday), sealed playoff qualification for GT, PBKS and RCB in one stroke. It was GT’s first-ever ten-wicket win in IPL history, and a third ten-wicket victory over DC by any team in IPL history.
Ironically, even a win for PBKS didn’t seal their playoff qualification. GT’s win helped PBKS seal their first-ever qualification after 11 years. Alongside that, GT also sealed their third playoff qualification in four years, showing incredible consistency in the league.
Despite a washout, RCB also sealed a playoff spot for themselves, with 17 points, now placed second only behind the Titans (18 points). However, a top-two finish for RCB could be out of question if they lose their remaining games as PBKS are breathing down their neck.
In the post-match presentation, GT’s skipper Shubman Gill reckoned that it is a great feeling to have the ‘Q’ next to their name.
“Feels great to be able to get that Q on the board. Still two important games for us, getting the momentum into the playoffs will be very important. Feels amazing, I have talked about this couple of times, when I'm batting, I want to play and think as a batsman, not as a captain. Last year was a learning for me as I was captain for the 1st time, the back end last season I learnt that,” Gill said.
Gujarat might still need to win both their remaining games to secure a top-two finish.
