MS Dhoni Should Have Retired After CSK Won IPL in 2023: Manoj Tiwary
The former CSK skipper has not made much of an impact with the bat over the last couple of seasons
Former India batter Manoj Tiwary feels MS Dhoni should have retired after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2023. Across IPL 2024 and 2025, Dhoni scored 237 runs at a strike rate of 185.2, but this season, he has managed just 76 runs at a strike rate of 138.18, batting way down the order.
Since IPL 2024, Dhoni has batted at No. 8 the most times, and more often than not, it has not made much of a difference in helping CSK get over the line.
Even on April 5 (Saturday), he scored an unbeaten 30 off 26 deliveries, coming into bat when CSK were in a spot of bother, but his knock did very little to take his side home.
"I think the right time for him to retire was in 2023 when he won the IPL trophy. He should have retired then. Somewhere, I feel that all the fame, name, and respect he earned from cricket, it's kind of slipping away in the last two years with the way he's been playing," Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.
"Fans are unable to bear watching him like this, and he’s losing that spark. The trust he built in fans over the years — especially in the hearts of Chennai fans, after the last match, the way fans came out on the roads and gave interviews against him, it should have been a sign that it’s not working anymore," said Tiwary.
Dhoni has played every season since the IPL's inception in 2008 and is the fifth-highest run-getter in the tournament, with 5,319 runs at a strike rate of 137.54.
