In an expected development after the closure of multiple airports in North India due to the ongoing military action at the Line of Control (LoC), the 61st match of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been shifted to Mumbai from its original venue in Dharamshala due to security concerns.
The game between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians was scheduled to be held on May 11, with MI yet to travel to idyllic ground in Himachal Pradesh. While the match will now be played in Mumbai, its understood that it will be held either at the Brabourne or the DY Patil stadium, and not the Wankhede.
The new development came after the military retaliation, named as ‘Operation Sindoor’ by the Indian Army, came as a response in early hours of May 7 to terror attacks in Pahalgam where 26 people, including one Nepali citizen, were profiled and killed.
As a precautionary measure, and also to monitor the movement of every single aircraft in the region, India shut down multiple airports in North India including Jodhpur and Rajkot airports.
India's armed forces targeted missile strikes in nine different locations of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) and Punjab province of Pakistan during the early hours on May 7. It is expected that the Pakistani armed forces can also escalate in response to these attacks.
Hence, it was considered a security risk to hold a game in Dharamshala which is hardly 60 km away the LoC and having thousands of people in a floodlit stadium in a security risk in these tense times. A call will also be taken soon on the match scheduled tomorrow, May 8, in Dharamshala between PBKS and Delhi Capitals.
