England’s new sensation Jacob Bethell, who was bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction for INR 2.6 crore, smashed a stroke-filled 50-ball 87 for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League 2024-25 match against Hobart Hurricanes on January 14 (Tuesday).
Bethell smoked eight fours and four maximums and registered his maiden fifty in the BBL. Prior to this encounter, the left-handed batter had managed only 107 runs in seven matches at an average of 15.43 and a strike rate of just above 100.
Bethell had only hit eight fours in his first seven games but managed to turn things around in Hobart. The Renegades got off to a horrible start in Match 34 of the BBL 2024-25, losing three wickets with just 23 runs on the board. The pressure was then on Bethell to finally prove his worth, and the young batter didn't disappoint.
Bethell took his time to get going, scoring just 26 runs off his first 24 deliveries. Then came a boundary off Peter Hatzoglou, and that turned things up for the youngster.
In his next 25 deliveries, Bethell smashed 57 runs and took his team to a fighting total of 154/7 in 20 overs.
Bethell has produced impressive numbers in seven T20Is he has played for England. The left-hander has 173 runs @ 57.66 and a strike rate of 167.96, which includes two fifties.
