Urvil Patel came into the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad as a replacement for Vansh Bedi and made an instant impact. He smashed 31 off just 11 balls on his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 7 (Wednesday) to get his side off to a quick start. His strike rate of 281.82 is the best for a batter on IPL debut.
281.82 - Urvil Patel vs KKR, Kolkata, 2025
260.00 - Vipraj Nigam vs LSG, Vizag, 2025
246.67 - Rachin Ravindra vs RCB, Chennai, 2024
246.15 - Suresh Raina vs PBKS, Mohali, 2008
242.11 - Abhishek Sharma vs RCB, Delhi, 2018
Not just that, he smashed a six off the second ball he faced, but it was his first scoring shot. Only two other CSK players have a six as their first scoring shot.
Maheesh Theekshana vs RCB, Pune, 2022 (First ball six)
Sameer Rizvi vs GT, Chennai, 2024 (First ball six)
Urvil Patel vs KKR, Kolkata, 2025 (Second ball six)
Urvil is known for his explosive batting in the domestic circuit. He holds the record for the second-fastest T20 ton, getting to the landmark off just 28 deliveries for Gujarat against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25.
On his IPL debut, the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter came to the crease in the first over after Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for a duck. He wasted little time as he smashed four sixes and a four in his 11-ball cameo.
In fact, between Urvil's explosive strokeplay, Mhatre's opening partner Devon Conway too was dismissed for a duck, making it just the second instance of both CSK openers being dismissed for a duck in a match. The previous instance was in 2008 when Parthiv Patel and Stephen Fleming were dismissed without troubling the scorers.
Coming back to the current season, CSK are out of contention for a place in the playoffs and are currently at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table.
