At the toss, Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Axar Patel announced that Madhav Tiwari will make his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut, and he will replace Vipraj Nigam in the side against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamsala on May 8 (Wednesday). He was bought for INR 40 lakh at the IPL 2025 auction.
This is not just his IPL debut, but this is his first-ever T20 match. However, he has the experience of playing in a couple of domestic T20 leagues. He turned up for Bhopal Leopards in the Madhya Pradesh T20 League, in which he picked up three wickets at an economy rate of 10.5, and with the bat he scored 72 runs at a strike rate of 205.7.
He also played for Jain Irrigation in the DY Patil T20 Cup 2025 earlier this year, where he struck twice, conceding at 8.9 an over and scored 23 runs at a strike rate of 109.5 in these matches. He has batted in every position from five to eight, and has an overall strike rate of close to 170.
The right-arm medium pacer has picked up a hat-trick as well. He picked up a hat-trick in a domestic competition in the Indore division against Rewa Division last year and finished with six wickets in that match.
Tiwari honed his skills at Amay Khurasiya’s Cricket Academy and made an impact in all age-group competitions in Madhya Pradesh. He played in Indore Under-15 and also led the Under-18s team. He was also the leading wicket-taker in the Senior Division MK Bhaya Trophy, where he made a mark as a fast-bowling all-rounder.
He went into the IPL 2025 auction with a base price of INR 30 lakh, with both DC and Mumbai Indians (MI) showing interest.
