IPL Enterprise value goes down by 10.6%; WPL valuation shoots up by 8%

Amazon, Apple, and Meta are no longer inclined toward bidding for IPL rights, which causes a decline in the value proposition for the league

According to a study conducted by D&P Advisory, the Indian Premier League's (IPL) valuation has gone down from INR 92,500 crore in 2023 to 82,700 crore in 2024 after the merger of Disney Star-JioCinema. Considering two of the biggest behemoths have merged to form a unified conglomerate, the BCCI's bargaining power has decreased substantially.

In 2022, when the IPL media rights were up for grabs, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secured Rs 48,390 crore in a five-year deal, as Star Sports secured TV rights and Jio secured the streaming rights. However, the same level of craziness may not be expected in 2027, when the new tender is up for grabs.

The report also suggested that Over-The-Top platforms like Amazon, Apple, and Meta are no longer inclined toward bidding for IPL rights, which is causing the league's value proposition to decline.

“The potential dearth of vigorous competition could lead to a more conservative approach in the bidding for IPL media rights. The days of escalating bid prices driven by fierce competition may be behind us, casting a shadow over the future growth trajectory of the IPL media rights valuation.”

On the other hand, the Women’s Premier League (WPL)’s valuation has shot up by 8% from INR 1,250 Cr in 2023 to 1,350 Cr in 2024. The league has gained high popularity in the first two seasons, and with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) winning the 2024 edition, it has gained a big fanbase as well. However, the league’s profitability is far from secure for now.
