IPL teams seek two year ban on overseas players pulling out post auction
The 10 franchises hardly agreed on anything during the recent meeting with BCCI. But almost everyone was on board for this
From now on, players who pull out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) without any legitimate reason after being bought in the mega or mini auction might not be able to do so without any consequences.
Almost every IPL franchise was on board in their recent meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to impose a two-year ban on such players if they fail to provide a legitimate reason for their absence from the season.
The franchises also expect to be informed about the status of players' availability during the season at the time of the auction so that any late changes don’t affect the team’s plans.
Virtually every franchise also agreed that overseas players should register for both the mega and mini auctions.
It has been seen in the past that players and their agents apply only for the mini-auction in a bid to game the system, as the mini-auctions generally fetch higher prices due to a lack of quality talent in those auctions. That's why you had Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins going for 24.75 Crore and 20.5 Crore in the mini auction last year.
Earlier, former Indian cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar have asked for bans on such players as well, as franchises suffer greatly from players pulling out at the last minute.
The BCCI is expected to make a decisive call on this issue in the upcoming days as it deliberates on the retentions for the 2025 season of the IPL.
