IPL to blame for Mayank Yadav's prolonged injuries: Brad Hogg
The pacer, who impressed in last season's IPL, made his international debut against Bangladesh in October 2024
Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg blamed the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Mayank Yadav's recent injuries, which have kept him on the sidelines. Mayank broke into the scene for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2024 with extreme pace.
That saw him graduate into the Indian team, making his debut in the T20 International (T20I) against Bangladesh in October 2024.
Hogg, who has played 145 matches for Australia across formats, believes that once such players get an IPL contract, they lose sight of how to bowl in the longer formats, and as a result, their endurance also takes a hit.
“He’s [Mayank Yadav] injury-prone because he’s young. I’m looking at his first-class stat, he’s only played one FC game. So, he hasn’t played too much of the longer format as well. I think it’s just sheer pace with Mayank Yadav," Hogg said.
“There are a couple of other bowlers that are very similar to him that bowl 145-150-plus but I think with young Indian bowlers coming through they bowl that pace. Sometimes, they are thinking right, just bowl sheer pace, if I can get an IPL contract, I’m happy. The end.”
Hogg also believes that bowlers have not been trained to deal with the endurance factor, which will help reduce injuries associated with bowling at pace.
"Once they get that IPL contract, everything falls out of the window. They don’t learn how to play the longer form of the game. They don’t know how to bowl within themselves, they don’t have that endurance factor. They haven’t been trained for that endurance factor," Hogg observed.
Mayank's injuries have been managed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for now. It is believed that the reason behind not including him in the T20I series against England was to ensure that he goes through a gradual development plan.
