David Warner's The Hundred campaign did not start off well as he managed just nine off 18 on debut against the Oval Invincibles. However, he made amends in the second game against Welsh Fire, where he smashed a match-winning 70* off just 45 deliveries to help London Spirit register their first win of the campaign.
Warner, who led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2016, smashed eight fours and a couple of sixes in his innings, putting on 43 for the first wicket with Kane Williamson. He then put on 46 for the second wicket with Jamie Smith. He ensured that he did not throw his wicket away after the start he got and led his team to 163/5 after 100 balls.
It is interesting to note that Warner's opening partner at SRH, Jonny Bairstow, too, put on an exhibition with the bat for Welsh Fire.
He finished unbeaten on 86 off just 50, hitting six fours and as many sixes. However, despite his effort, Fire fell eight runs short. Luke Wells (12 off 6) was Welsh's second-highest scorer in the match after Bairstow.
As a result, Welsh Fire have now lost both their matches. The Spirit will next be in action against Manchester Originals on August 11 (Monday). Welsh Fire will also take on Manchester Originals next on August 13 (Wednesday).
