'It was a mistake, should never do that," Bell on the controversial 2011 'run-out'

India captain MS Dhoni won ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the decade for calling the England batsman back

10 years after the infamous 'run-out' in the Trent Bridge Test against India, England batsman Ian Bell acknowledges that it was wrong of him to look to leave the field and is something that should have never happened.

The incident he was referring to was when Eoin Morgan thought he had hit the ball to the fence off the last ball before tea on Day Three. As a result, the batsmen stopped running and were heading towards the pavilion, not knowing that Praveen Kumar had stopped the boundary and Abhinav Mukund had knocked the bails over.

After an appeal, the third umpire looked into it and adjudged Bell run-out, much to his and the crowd's unhappiness. However, India captain MS Dhoni had revoked the appeal and boos turned to cheers as Bell walked out to resume his innings.

Talking of the incident, Bell told The Grade Cricketer's YouTube channel, "When I look back to that, I mean, I must have been hungry or something because I literally just belted for the pavilion when I thought it was four if it was either way around, I would have been safe and we would have been fine. But yeah, they obviously got Dhoni a 'Spirit of the Game' award for the decade or something like that. But yeah [it was] a mistake on my behalf, should never do that."

Dhoni's gesture helped him the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the decade. Bell went on to score 156 and India lost the Test by 319 runs and eventually suffered a 4-0 whitewash.
