Rishabh Pant’s head coach at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Justin Langer, doesn’t rate his Gabba knock, which led to the famous heist of the Gabba in 2021, as one of the greatest, but was okay to call it an amazing and incredible knock.
“We lost to India a couple of Test series ago. Rishabh Pant played an incredible innings at the Gabba. But it was also the fourth Test during Covid and it was the flattest wicket. That time of year in January was different from playing in November. We had lost that advantage," Langer was quoted by TOI as saying on ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ Podcast.
The former Australia coach, who was also the coach of the Aussie team during that series, said that the knock by Pant reminded him of the Ben Stokes onslaught at Headingley in 2019.
“It was an amazing effort. Pant’s innings somewhat reminded me of Ben Stokes’ innings in Headingley, actually. He came in, he was almost fearless, and he will be lauded because of it,” Langer said.
Stokes had hit 135 at Headingley and added an unbeaten 76 for the last wicket with Jack Leach to take England to victory. Pant, on the other hand, had several partnerships, including important ones of 61 with Cheteshwar Pujara for the fourth wicket and 53 for the sixth wicket with Washington Sundar.
Pant's efforts helped India win a second consecutive Test series away in Australia.
