It's a bit of a bummer, but the game goes on: Perry on getting out on 99

The star all-rounder fell agonisingly short of a well-deserved century on the opening day of the Women's Ashes Test

Ellyse Perry continued her sublime form in red-ball cricket as she scored a sublime 99 in Australia's first innings dominance on Day one of the Women's Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.

After opting to bat first, Perry walked in at number three and anchored the innings in the absence of Meg Lanning. The all-rounder accumulated the ones and the twos before taking the attack to the England bowlers in her 153-ball stay.

Her heroics with the bat ensured the visiting side end the day in a commanding position on 328 runs for the loss of seven wickets at stumps.

"It was just a great tussle. Importantly, it was a nice way for us to finish at the end there, after a pretty tricky session after the rain delay," Perry said after the day's play.

"If both teams look at it, I think they'd be pretty happy with today in different areas, and then there are probably other areas where one team got the upper hand over the other. So yeah, I think that's a great day of Test cricket if it looks like that."

The 32-year-old fell agonisingly short of her century as he edged a slightly wide delivery off Lauren Filer to Nat-Sciver Brunt to gully to bring an end to sublime innings.

"Like every other ball, it's just an opportunity at a particular moment in time, and I'd had a really great tussle with Filer the whole time. I thought she was extremely impressive today on debut and brought the game alive at different points."

"So that ball just had my measure, which is totally fine. The Hundred a number and one that we talk about a lot in cricket, but the whole experience out there today was so much fun. I loved every opportunity. Sometimes things just go that way. It's hard to be disappointed."

"It was nice to contribute. It was nice to be a part of a few really good partnerships, particularly that one with TMac. It's just like any other time to get out. It's a bit of a bummer, but gosh, the game definitely goes on, and life goes on for sure," she concluded.
