Young sensation Dewald Brevis announced himself at the international level today, and he did so by playing one of the greatest T20I knocks of all time. Batting at No.4, the 22-year-old played an extraordinary innings as he finished with 125*, the highest ever score by a South African in a T20I. Brevis also broke a ton of other records in his monstrous display, including becoming the youngest ever South African to hit a T20I ton.
In the aftermath of the second T20I which the Proteas won, skipper Aiden Markram was full of praise for the ‘freakish’ youngster.
“The boys just found themselves laughing on the side. He hits it miles, quite a freakish display,” Markram said after the game, reported Cricbuzz.
“It's scary, he will keep getting better, hell of a ball-striker. Quite chuffed that the world got to see what he can do,” Markram added.
Reflecting on his record-breaking night, Brevis said that he was grateful to have had the opportunity to influence games for his country at the highest level.
“I have not really thought about it [the knock], but extremely grateful,” Brevis said.
“Just happy we won today, great to be out here on the winning side. To celebrate that final wicket - that was the ultimate (feeling) today. You want to win, so to be able to come back strong after the first game is fantastic. Everyone played their part.
“We took our catches, bowlers nailed their plans. Good to see it all (pan out).”
Brevis’ extraordinary assault broke the internet. It even caught the attention of AB de Villiers, who expressed how he was baffled that Brevis initially went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction. Brevis was later snapped up as replacement by Chennai Super Kings, who are now certain to retain him ahead of IPL 2026.
The two teams will have three days off before the decider in Cairns on August 16th (Saturday).
