Jacob Oram named New Zealand men's bowling coach

The former New Zealand all-rounder will begin his role on October 7, before New Zealand’s three-Test series in India

Jacob Oram, the former New Zealand allrounder, has been selected as the new Blackcaps bowling coach, replacing Shane Jurgensen, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on August 29 (Thursday).

Oram, who’s been coaching since 2014, has had a long career for New Zealand at the international level where he played 33 Tests, 160 ODIs and 36 T20Is for the Blackcaps. He has 60 Test wickets at an average of 33.15, 173 ODI wickets at 29.17 and 19 T20I wickets. He also averages 36 with the bat in Test cricket. In his Indian Premier League (IPL) days, Oram plied his trade at the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Chennai Super Kings.

Oram had earlier worked with the New Zealand senior men’s side in a variety of competitions and tours, including the Test tour of Bangladesh, the T20 World Cup this year, and the T20I series against Australia.

The tall New Zealander began his coaching career in 2014 by coaching the New Zealand A side, then coached the White Ferns, the senior women’s side, from 2018. He also coached the MI Cape Town team in the SA20 and looked after the Central Hinds in the Super Smash.

His job begins on October 7, which is just before New Zealand’s three Test matches in India.

"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to be involved with the Blackcaps again," Oram said on his appointment.

"To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour.

"The recent opportunities I've had have been a great insight into where this team is going and I'm excited to continue that work in the coming seasons.

"There's a fresh new wave of talent coming through in the Blackcaps bowling ranks and I hope that I can share my knowledge and experience to help best prepare them for the challenges of international cricket."
