England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith became the fastest wicketkeeper to reach 1000 Test runs in the third Test at Lord's, equalling Quinton de Kock’s record of reaching it in 21 innings. However, in terms of balls faced, he has reached the milestone the quickest, as he has taken only 1303 balls, eight fewer than Sarfaraz Ahmed (Pakistan).
Smith has had a stellar series so far with the bat for England, and is the second highest scorer behind Indian skipper Shubman Gill with 395 runs in the first two games, which included a scintillating 184*.
Even in the Lord’s Test, he has begun brilliantly, with a half-century at almost a run a ball. He was dropped early by KL Rahul in this innings; however, he capitalised on every bad ball bowled by India.
Smith has had a brilliant start to his Test career, scoring a 70 on his Test debut against the West Indies and then followed it with a 95 in his third Test. He also scored a century against Sri Lanka at Manchester, and then followed it with an 89 in Rawalpindi in the next series to show his versatility as a batter.
He averages 61.52 with the bat at the moment after 13 Tests for England.
