Jason Roy ruled out of T20 World Cup due to calf injury

James Vince will replace the opening batter in England's squad

England opener Jason Roy has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2021 T20 World Cup with a calf tear he sustained during the Super 12 match against South Africa. James Vince will replace the opening batter in the England squad.

During the chase against South Africa at Sharjah on Saturday, Roy called for a single in the fifth over and went down on the ground immediately with pain as he retired hurt. The 31-year old didn't come back to bat in the match which England lost by 10 runs.

"I'm gutted to be ruled out of the World Cup," Roy said. "It is a bitter pill to swallow. I will be staying on to support the boys and hopefully, we can go all the way and lift that trophy. It has been an unbelievable journey so far and we have to continue expressing ourselves and concentrating on us.

"The rehab has already started and even though I've torn my calf, I'm going to give myself the best chance of being ready for the T20 tour of the Caribbean at the start of next year."

England will face New Zealand in the first semifinal at Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
