Jasprit Bumrah has developed into one of the best bowlers in the world. He showed his prowess in the recent T20 World Cup, where he finished with 15 wickets at an economy rate of 4.17 as India clinched the title — their first since 2007. He has been rested for the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka but is expected to return for Bangladesh's upcoming tour in September.
Former Sri Lanka batter Sanath Jayasuriya lauds the Indian fast bowler, saying he is unique and he needs to be respected, but also insisted on taking full toll of him on his off-day.
"He [Bumrah] is unique. We need to respect him and his skills," Sri Lanka's interim head coach said, in a chat with TImes of India.
"On his day, you’ll need to respect him, but then there are days when he is not up to the mark, it’s on those days you need to capitalise. Bowlers like him are on top because they’ve clear thinking in what they want to execute."
Jayasuriya was also quick to praise opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, praising his work ethic. Jaiswal smashed 41 off just 21 balls in the first T20 International (T20I) against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on July 27 (Saturday) to give India an explosive start.
"Jaiswal is another great talent from India. He has the passion to do well, and to do that, he has been working very hard. He has made sacrifices and is a dedicated kid, that’s why he is performing," Jayasuriya noted.
"I have heard about his work ethic, and that’s quite impressive. Recently, we had a session with Zubin [Bharucha], the director of high performance at Rajasthan Royals, and he told us how hard Jaiswal trains.
Chasing 214 in the first T20I, Sri Lanka seemed to be on course at 140/1 but lost their remaining nine wickets for just 30 runs. They will look to bounce back when they take on India again in the second T20I in Pallekele on July 28 (Sunday).
