Team India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna confirmed after day two that Jasprit Bumrah left the field mid-way through Australia’s first innings due to a back spasm. Bumrah began the day with the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne inside the first 30 minutes, but left the field after bowling his 10th over of the day. That was just a few minutes after lunch, post which the team India skipper was seen leaving the ground.
Live visuals later showed the Indian skipper leaving the SCG in a van, with Mark Nicholas confirming on air that Bumrah had been sent for scans.
Prasidh said that Bumrah’s availability for the second innings will depend on the medical team’s assessment.
“He had a back spasm, he had gone for scans. The medical team is monitoring him. We will know [about his availability] whenever the medical team gets back to us,” Prasidh said.
But despite bowling only 10 overs in the second innings, Bumrah, on day two, broke the record for the most wickets taken by an Indian bowler in a Test series in Australia. He went past Bishan Singh Bedi (31) with the wicket of Labuschagne.
In Bumrah’s absence, team India were led temporarily by Virat Kohli after lunch on day two.
At stumps on day two, India were 141/6, leading Australia by 145 runs. The team might need Bumrah’s services in order to bowl Australia out and square the series.
