Jasprit Bumrah to miss ODIs against Sri Lanka

The right-arm pacer was added to the squad after passing the mandatory fitness Test on January 3

A day prior to the commencement of India's ODI series against Sri Lanka at Guwahati, the Men in Blue have been dealt with a severe blow as Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the three-match series, the BCCI reported on Monday (January 9).

The release mentioned that Bumrah " will need some more time to build bowling resilience" and will miss the series as a precautionary measure. The board has decided not to name a replacement for Bumrah.

"It's a very unfortunate incident with him. The poor guy (Bumrah) has been working really hard at the NCA for all this time. Just when he got back to his full fitness, when he started bowling and everything, in the last two days I think this incident happened where he felt a little bit of stiffness in his back," Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said on the eve of the first ODI.

"It's just a stiffness, when Bumrah says anything you have to be very cautious about it. That is what we did, I thought it was very important to make that decision then -- just pull him out. When we named him (Bumrah) he was in the process of getting his workload done, he was bowling at the nets. We need to be very careful with him. He had a major injury before the World Cup.

The right-arm pacer was earlier included in the squad on January 3 after passing the mandatory fitness test at the National Cricket Academy.

In a press release on January 3, the BCCI stated, "The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India's ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka."

The 29-year-old has been ruled out of action from September 2022 due to a recurrent back injury and was set to join the team ahead of the first ODI on Tuesday, January 10.
