Follow UsJay Shah is set to continue as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president. Shah, who is in the middle of his second year of his two-year term, will continue for another year and was unanimously approved during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Bali on Wednesday (January 31).
The ACC top spot is rotated among full-members in Asia. It was going to be Sri Lanka's turn next, but Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chief Shammi Silva proposed Shah's extension, which the other members accepted.
"Jay has played a pivotal role in steering the ACC towards significant progress in promoting and developing cricket across the Asian region. Under Mr. Shah's guidance, the ACC has been instrumental in unearthing and promoting new talent in cricketing powerhouses like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka," Silva said.
As a result, Shah, who took over from Bangladesh's Nazmul Hassan in 2021, becomes the first member to get two consecutive terms.
"I am grateful to the ACC Board for their continued trust. We must remain committed to ensuring the all-round development of the sport, with a special focus on regions where it is still in its infancy. The ACC is committed to nurturing cricket across Asia," Shah, who is also the BCCI secretary, said after he was re-elected as ACC president.
It was initially believed that Shah would step aside from the role and put his hat in the ring to become the next ICC chief. Current ICC chief Greg Barclay's two-year tenure at the top post also comes to an end later this year. With Shah to continue as ACC president for another year, it potentially rules him out of the ICC post.
