On Day 3 of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, Joe Root etched his name deeper into cricketing history, overtaking Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis to become the third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket.
Root, who came into the Manchester Test needing 30 runs to surpass Dravid (13,288) and 31 to edge past Kallis (13,289), did both in style. He is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) and Ricky Ponting (13,378) on the all-time list.
15,921 - Sachin Tendulkar (329 inns)
13,378 - Ricky Ponting (287 inns)
13,290* - Joe Root (286 inns)
13,289 - Jacques Kallis (280 inns)
13,288 - Rahul Dravid (286 inns)
At 34, Root has time on his side, but overtaking Tendulkar’s tally would likely require a few more prolific years.
Root also became the first player to score 1000 Test runs at Old Trafford, and is now just the third Englishman after Alastair Cook and Graham Gooch to rack up 1000+ Test runs at multiple venues.
Alastair Cook - Lord's (1937 runs) & The Oval (1217 runs)
Graham Gooch - Lord's (2015 runs) & The Oval (1097 runs)
Joe Root - Lord's (2166 runs) & Manchester (1001* runs)
