Jofra Archer is still to make a serious mark after returning from his prolonged injury, and his lack of rhythm was also visible in the Rajasthan Royals' season opener in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Playing against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Archer was taken for the cleaners and conceded 76 runs in his four overs — his worst-ever spell in the T20 format, playing for any team. He also conceded 14 boundaries in his spell, the most boundary a bowler conceded in an innings in IPL history.
Archer came to bowl first in the fifth over, and Travis Head smashed him for 23 runs then itself, hitting a 105-metre monster six and crunching four fours in that over. Archer returned in the 11th over, and then Nitish Kumar Reddy hammered him for two fours, one over cover and one over midwicket. After that, the centurion Ishan Kishan kept on the hitting ante from his end and didn’t spare Archer, smashing him for three sixes in the 13th over.
Archer’s misery was only exacerbated in the last over he bowled on the day, where Heinrich Klaasen and Kishan smashed five fours in the 18th over of the innings. The English pacer ended with 76/0, 16 runs more than his second-worst spell in the shortest format.
With their premier bowler registering embarrassing records on the day, RR allowed SRH to end up with the second-highest total in the history of IPL — 286/6.
