Jos Buttler Hints At Resignation: ‘We Should Consider All Possibilities’
England have now lost 13 of the previous 17 games they’ve played under Buttler's captaincy
On the back of England’s embarrassing group stage exit at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the team’s skipper, Jos Buttler, hinted at potentially walking away from captaincy.
England won the 2022 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Buttler but have since gotten knocked out in the group stages of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy after barely scraping through to the semis of the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they got humiliated by India in the final four.
The numbers are damning for Buttler, under whom England have now lost 13 of the previous 17 games they’ve played since the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
“I don't want to say any emotional statements right now. But I think for myself and the other guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities,” Buttler said at the post-match presentation when asked about his future.
Speaking of the match, Buttler reckoned that the Three Lions let it slip big time in the final 10 overs of Afghanistan’s batting innings. Afghanistan were 212/5 at the start of the 41st over but eventually went on to make 325/7.
"They got away from us there in the last 10 overs. Credit to Ibrahim, he played a fantastic innings. If we look back and reflect, 113 off the last 10 pushed them up to a score that was a very good score on that pitch,” Buttler said.
Buttler also confirmed at the post-match presentation that pacer Mark Wood injured his knee around the fourth over of his spell and played through injury. Wood returned figures of 0/50 off his eight overs and was not able to bowl at the death.
