Dewald Brevis put on a show with the bat on his debut for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)’s Kamindu Mendis pulled off a catch for the ages to cut short his innings in Match 43 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on April 25 (Friday).
Playing his first game of the IPL 2025, Brevis got off to a steady start on a two-paced Chepauk surface. The right-hander from South Africa scored 17 off his first 17 deliveries before whacking Mendis for three maximums in an over.
The ambidextrous spinner from Sri Lanka, who had conceded only six runs in his first two overs and also dismissed Ravindra Jadeja, felt the wrath of Brevis’ willow in the 12th over.
Brevis welcomed Mendis with a no-look six down the ground before going on back foot and tonking one over deep mid-wicket. Brevis finished the over with another maximum over long-on, collecting 20 runs from the over.
The Proteas batter then picked Harshal Patel’s off-cutter and slammed it for a six over deep extra cover to race from 17 off 17 to 42 off 25 deliveries. The pressure was starting to build on SRH, but that’s when Mendis pulled off something extraordinary to send Brevis back in the hut.
The South African got a full delivery from Harshal and smashed it with immense power towards the long-off region. There wasn’t any elevation, but the ball was travelling like a bullet towards the fence.
Mendis started running towards his left, and the ball was also curving away from the Sri Lankan. Once Mendis realised he won’t be able to get his body behind the ball, the spin-bowling all-rounder dived full-stretch to his left like a goalkeeper and grabbed the catch with both hands.
Mendis also made sure his elbows didn’t hit the ground and left Brevis and everyone else on the field completely stunned. SRH captain Pat Cummins could also not believe what Mendis had pulled off.
Brevis scored 42 off 25 deliveries and could have gotten a lot more if not for Mendis’ brilliance on the field.
