Karun Nair last played a Test for India in 2017, but his international career seemed to drift into obscurity with a few years of relative out-of-form in domestic cricket. But with a prolific Ranji Trophy season for Vidarbha under his belt, Nair has found himself on the cusp of returning to the Indian Test XI for an overseas assignment.
And what a statement he made in preparation — a double century to start with.
In the first unofficial Test against England Lions, Nair, batting at No.3, was in imperious touch, racing to 203, laying a solid foundation for India A. He shared a 181-run stand with Sarfaraz Khan on Day 1, followed by a 195-run partnership with Dhruv Jurel.
Not everyone gets a second chance! But when you do make it count, like #KarunNair! 👊🏻

The Indian batter roared back in style with an unbeaten 186 against ENG which helped IND finish at 409/3 at the end of Day 1! 🔥#ENGvIND 👉🏻 Starts June 20th, 2:30PM only on JioHotstar pic.twitter.com/rmQwXnohnY
After Jurel fell for 94 early on Day 2, Nair carried on stoically, reaching the double hundred with calm, with Shardul Thakur at the other end.
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired and KL Rahul expected to return to the top of the order, a clear vacancy has emerged in the middle order. And Karun, with his recent form and composure, has put himself firmly in contention to grab that No.5 spot.
