Karun Nair continued his historic Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2024-25 as he smashed yet another fifty-plus score (88*) in the semi-final of the tournament against Maharashtra while playing for Vidarbha on January 16 (Friday).
With this knock, his sixth fifty-plus knock in the tournament, the 32-year-old has now put pressure on the Indian selectors who will select the team for the three-match ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Nair, who had already scored five centuries in his last six List-A innings, now averages more than 750 at the end of his seven innings in VHT 2024-25. It is the highest for all batters to have scored more than 500 runs in the tournament’s history.
With at least one match to go for Nair, he might be in contention to end the season with the most runs in a single edition of the tournament’s 32-year-old history. He has so far accumulated 752 runs, while the record for most runs in a season stands with Narayan Jagadeesan, who scored 830 runs in the 2022-23 edition.
Nair, who played for Karnataka in the domestic circuit before moving to Vidarbha, was one of the three highest scorers for the central Indian team. His 88*, combined with Dhruv Shorey’s 114 and Yash Rathod’s 116, helped Vidarbha post 380/3 in their 50 overs.
