Keshav Maharaj to lead South Africa in ODI series vs Netherlands

Many regular members of the team like skipper Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada and others have been rested

South Africa announce their 16-member squad for the home One-Day International (ODI) series against the Netherlands. Several regular players including skipper Temba Bavuma has been rested for the three-match series. Keshav Maharaj will lead the Proteas in his absence. This is not the first time Maharaj will lead South Africa. He led the side in Sri Lanka just ahead of the T20 World Cup as well.

This is the first time the Netherlands are playing a full international series in South Africa. The three-match ODI series, starting November 26 will be part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. The first two matches will be played in Centurion before moving to the Wanderers for the third and final match.

With South Africa not going in with their full-strength side, it gives an opportunity to Wayne Parnell, who last played for South Africa in 2017, to return to the side. Zubayr Hamza and Ryan Rickelton have received their maiden ODI call-ups.

Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne, Daryn Dupavillon and Sisanda Magala too have been called up to the side that also includes Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Reeza Hendricks, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams, who were part of the T20 World Cup squad.

CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang said, “The National Selection Panel and I are excited to give this group of exciting cricketers a good go. These selections are part of our strategy to give opportunities and reward the good work of players in our provincial system."

“We do not take this historic tour of the Netherlands to our shores lightly. We are keen to showcase the talent that South Africa has and to give opportunities to players who have been patient for a long time and are raring to go."
