Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal have been rested for the five-match T20I series in West Indies, the BCCI announced on Thursday (July 14). Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the ODI series, will lead the squad.
Meanwhile, R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav (subject to fitness) and KL Rahul (subject to fitness) have been included in the 18-man squad. Kuldeep had suffered a hand injury in the home series against South Africa in June, while Rahul recently underwent a surgery for sports hernia in Germany.
Former India captain Kohli has struggled with the bat of late and a groin injury has only made things worse for the star batter. The right-hander missed the third T20I and first ODI against England and is also unlikely to feature in the second match at Lord’s on Thursday (July 14). Both Kohli and Bumrah also won't feature in the three-match ODI series, while Chahal will play the 50-over format but not the T20Is.
India have also called back Ashwin, who hasn't played a T20I since 2021. The offspinner will team up with Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel to form India's spin attack.
Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has been preferred over tearaway quick Umran Malik. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, who are not part of the ODI squad, will feature in the T20Is. In his outings in Ireland and England, Malik has shown that he remains a work in progress and needs to improve on his accuracy. Malik is the only one to miss out from the squad that recently defeated England.
The ODI series will get underway from July 22, while the five T20Is will be played on July 29, August 1, 2, 6 and 7. The last games of the series will be played in Lauderhill, Florida.
