Lahiru Thirimanne hospitalised following a car crash

The 34-year-old is believed to have sustained minor injuries

Former Sri Lanka batter Lahiru Thirimanne has been hospitalised following a car crash in Anuradhapura. He is believed to be in the car with three other individuals and is believed to have sustained minor injuries. The incident took place on Thursday (March 14) at 7.45 AM.

The 34-year-old was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, according to the local police. It is understood that Thirimanne was on a pilgrimage when the accident occurred.

"Police mentioned that the car in which Thirimanne was travelling had collided with a lorry arriving from the opposite direction at around 07.45 a.m. this morning," a report on Ada Derana stated. 

"Three other individuals travelling in the car, the driver of the lorry and another person have been injured and hospitalised."

Thirimanne made his debut for Sri Lanka in 2010 and went on to represent his country till 2022. He scored over 5,500 runs in close to 200 international matches before retiring in July 2023. He led Sri Lanka in five One-Day Internationals (ODI) and was also part of Sri Lanka's World T20 triumph in 2014.

Overall, he has played three T20 World Cups and a couple of 50-over World Cups as well. His last game for Sri Lanka was the pink-ball Test against India in Bengaluru in March 2022.
