Stand-in skipper Tom Latham smashed 10 boundaries and five sixes in his unbeaten 140 off 123 balls as New Zealand eased past Netherlands in the second ODI on Saturday at Hamilton. The big win also saw the hosts seal the three-match series by 2-0.
Put in to bat first, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls added 22 quick runs in 4 overs before Netherlands pacers Fred Klassen and Logan van Beek skittled out the top order in a flurry.
Klassen sent back Guptill after Bas de Leede caught at cover while Van Beek castled Will Young. Ross Taylor, Nicholls and Michael Bracewell followed in quick succession as the host were reeling at 32/5.
Latham then added 57 runs with Colin de Grandhomme (16) to lead the recovery, while also reaching his 17th ODI fifty in the 30th over. Doug Bracewell (41) joined the New Zealand captain for a stand of 90 runs. Latham found an able partner in Ish Sodhi (18) who added 42 runs for the eighth wicket as he completed his sixth ODI hundred in the 43rd over.
Latham kept up the momentum as the hosts finished 264/9 in 50 overs.
Chasing 265, Netherlands lost opener Stephan Myburgh in the first over while Kyle Jamieson removed Max O'Dowd with the first ball of the second over. Vikramjit Singh (31) and Bas de Leede (37), the only batters to score over 30 runs among the Dutch, put up a 74-run stand for the third wicket. Grandhomme broke the partnership in the 16th over when he got Singh loft it straight to Sodhi at long-on.
After Sodhi removed De Leede the 23rd over, Netherlands were unable to recover and crumbled to 146 all out. Off spinner Michael Bracewell was pick of the Black Caps bowlers with 3-21 while Jamieson and Sodhi picked two wickets apiece.
The third and final ODI will be played on Monday at Hamilton.
