VVS Laxman has joined Rohit Sharma and Co. in the UAE for the forthcoming Asia Cup in the absence of head coach Rahul Dravid, Cricbuzz reported on Wednesday (August 24). Dravid didn't travel with the team after testing positive for Covid on Tuesday.
Laxman recently served as the coach for India in the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe after Dravid was rested for the tour.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India hasn't made an official announcement but Laxman was asked to travel with vice-captain KL Rahul, Avesh Khan, Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar from Harare and join the Asia Cup squad.
It's being reported that Laxman will be in charge of the Indian team till Dravid joins the set-up. Batting coach Vikram Rathour and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who also didn't travel to Zimbabwe, have already reached Dubai and are fulfilling their duties.
"Mr. Dravid is under the supervision of the BCCI Medical team and has mild symptoms. He will join the team once he returns with a negative COVID-19 report," the BCCI had stated in a release.
The Men in Blue will commence their Asia Cup campaign against their arch-rivals Pakistan on August 28 in Dubai.
