Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn advised Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to learn from India great Sachin Tendulkar on how to curb the compulsion of playing his go-to shot and save his wicket in the process.
“It’s his go-to shot, and breaking that instinct is tough,” Indian Express quoted Steyn as saying to JioHotstar, about Jaiswal’s compulsion to play the cut shot on balls wide outside off.
“When you see the ball in your zone, you go for it. But maybe it’s something he needs to consciously cut down on,” he added.
Going back in the past to dig out an example, Steyn remembered the great Sachin Tendulkar’s resolve to not play a cover drive, his favourite shot, in Sydney 12 years back as prior to that knock, he kept getting out caught behind in that series while playing it. As it turned out, in the very same innings, Sachin ended up with 241*.
“I remember Sachin once removed the drive from his game in Australia. Jaiswal may also need to say, ‘Unless it’s in a specific area, I won’t play it. In this area, I’ll trust my defence’,” Steyn said about the great man’s resolve.
Not just in the last innings of the Guwahati Test, but Jaiswal got out playing the same shot in the fourth innings of the Kolkata Test as well.
