‘Legend, Unsung Hero’ - Teammates and Ex-Players Lavish Praise On Pujara After Retirement

Pujara amassed 7,195 Test runs and 19 Test centuries for India

One of India’s batting icons called it a day on August 24 (Friday) as Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket. The announcement has not come as a surprise as it’s been over two years since Pujara last played for the country, but it has still moved people, given the right-hander’s contribution to Indian cricket.

Pujara debuted as a 22-year-old against Australia in 2010, and played his last Test also against Australia, albeit as a 35-year-old. In the years between, he amassed 7,195 Test runs with 19 Test centuries, and was one of the lynchpins of the most successful Indian Test side in history.

On the back of his announcement, tributes have poured in for the 37-year-old, who is one of the most revered, liked and well-respected cricketers across the world.

VVS Laxman (on X)

“From the time I first saw Pujara and his potential, it was brilliant to see that potential translating into performance. His courage, grit and determination stood out and the body blows that he took in the Gabba test we won against Australia symbolised Pujara the cricketer for me, willing to give everything he has for his country. Well done @cheteshwar1 and wish you a happy and joyous second innings.”

Harbhajan Singh (on X)

“Cheteshwar Pujara – the unsung hero of Indian cricket. A player who always put the team before himself, who gave not just a hundred percent but everything possible for India. Your contribution to Indian cricket is immense and will be remembered for a very, very long time.”

Ajinkya Rahane (on Instagram)

“Congratulations Puji on a wonderful career. Loved every moment of playing alongside you and will always cherish our special Test wins together. Best wishes for the second innings.”

Rishbah Pant (on Instagram)

“From Sydney to the Gabba and beyond, some of my best memories came batting alongside you. I will always treasure our partnerships and your contribution to Indian cricket. Congratulations on a remarkable Test career, Puji bhai, and wishing you the very best ahead.”

Mohammed Siraj (on Instagram)

“Your dedication and your hard work have always inspired us. Thank you and all the best.”

Sunil Gavaskar (to Times of India)

"One of the old-school cricketers who put India above everything else. Took endless blows for Indian cricket but never took a backward step. Hopefully, Indian cricket will use his experience and expertise to teach young budding cricketers that whatever they become in life is because of Indian cricket and it should come above anything and everything,” Gavaskar told TOI.
