LPL 2022 postponed owing to economic situation in Sri Lanka

The future of the 2022 edition now hangs in the balance

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have announced that the 2022 edition of the Lanka Premier League, which was slated to begin in August, has been postponed with immediate effect due to the economic situation in the country. Earlier this month, a draft was held for the now-postponed edition that saw teams pick both local and overseas players. A total of 20 rounds were held for five teams — Colombo Stars, Jaffna Kings, Galle Gladiators, Kandy Falcons, and Dambulla Giants.

But the future of the 2022 edition now hangs in the balance, and the competition might only go ahead should the situation in Sri Lanka improve.

“Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to announce that the Lanka Premier League 2022, which was scheduled to be held from 1st to 21st August, 2022 will be postponed, with immediate effect,” read an official release from SLC.

“This decision was taken by the SLC, following a request made by the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the Rights Holder of the tournament, which cited the current ‘economic situation,’ in the country, as not conducive to hosting the tournament.”

LPL 2022 was set to be the third edition of the competition which kick-started in 2020, during the pandemic. Each of the first two editions were won by a Jaffna-based franchise (Jaffna Stallions in 2020 and Jaffna Kings in 2021).
