It was complete madness at Mullanpur, where the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match between hosts Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings was going on. On April 8 (Tuesday), in the 18th over, MS Dhoni was hit on the pads by Lockie Ferguson, and a huge appeal for LBW from the Punjab Kings followed.
It looked plumb, but the umpire gave it not out. The Punjab side reviewed it, but it was in vain as the decision was upheld after the ball tracking showed that the wickets’ hitting was ‘umpire's call’.
However, what followed was pure drama as Devon Conway, the settled batter, batting on 69, retired out after Dhoni hit Ferguson for a six. On the last ball, Dhoni got a high full toss, and he swung it hard. The ball went for a six behind the keeper and everyone thought that MSD would get a free-hit.
As it turned out, even after the on-field umpire called it out, the technology was used to check it, and the decision was reversed. Nobody could believe that a ball, looking a waist-high no-ball as clearly as daylight, was called a no-ball.
After Tilak Varma of Mumbai Indians, Conway became the second player to be retired in IPL 2025. The decision did not go well for CSK, as Jadeja, who replaced Conway, could do nothing great to win the game. CSK lost by 18 runs to succumb to their fourth loss in a row.
