Man Arrested For Stalking And Molesting Two Australian Cricketers In Indore

The two Australian women cricketers were ‘inappropriately touched’ after being stalked while returning from a cafe

Two Australian women cricketers participating in the ICC Women’s World Cup were stalked and molested in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday morning. The local police arrested the accused within hours of the incident; however, it raised serious questions over the security arrangements for visiting players.

According to officials, the incident occurred when the players were walking near the Khajrana area after leaving their hotel for a café. A man on a motorcycle reportedly followed them and allegedly touched one of the cricketers inappropriately before fleeing. The players immediately informed their team security officer, who alerted the local authorities.

Following the complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the MIG Police Station under Sections 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said a bystander had noted the motorcycle’s registration number, which helped them identify and apprehend the suspect. The accused, identified as Aqeel Khan, was arrested the next day.

Senior police officials confirmed that the accused is a local resident and is being interrogated. “We acted promptly on the information provided and managed to trace the vehicle and arrest the person involved,” an officer said.

The Australian team was in Indore for their World Cup match earlier in the week. Following the incident, additional security measures have reportedly been put in place for all international players staying in the city.

The episode has drawn sharp attention to the safety of foreign athletes in India, as the country recently got the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. Local authorities have acknowledged the lapse and assured strict action against the offender, as well as a review of the security measures for the visiting teams.
