Manjrekar advises BCCI to refrain Gambhir from press conferences

Former India cricketer turned cricket pundit Sanjay Manjrekar advised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not to let head coach Gautam Gambhir face the media and instead hand over the duties to captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. 

Manjrekar made these observations after Gambhir was asked about former Australia cricketer Ricky Ponting’s comments on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s form. Instead of explaining his point, Gambhir questioned Ponting's credentials for making sweeping comments about Indian cricketers. 

“Just watched Gambhir in the press conference. May be wise for @BCCI to keep him away from such duties, let him work behind the scenes. He does not have the right demeanour nor the words when interacting with them. Rohit & Agarkar, much better guys to front up for the media,” read Manjrekar’s post on X. 

In the pre-tour press conference ahead of the Boarder-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gambhir said, “He [Ponting] should be talking about Australia. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still passionate about the game and want to achieve more. They are hungry for success and have done exceptionally well for the country over the years.”

“Even the other players are doing a fine job, and I am sure we will improve as a group. I have no concerns regarding Virat and Rohit,” he added. 

Since Gambhir took over as India's head coach, the Men in Blue have lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years and then were clean swept for the first time ever in a three-match Test series against New Zealand at home.
