Matthew Mott Returns To Women's Cricket After 3.5 Years To Coach Sydney Sixers

Mott will also continue in his various other franchise roles

Matthew Mott will make a return to women’s cricket after a gap of three and a half years after he signed a deal with the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) on May 9 (Friday). He will replace former England player Charlotte Edwards in the role, after she took over as England Women’s new head coach.

Mott, at the same time, will continue in his various other franchise roles as assistant coach to the Sixers’ men’s team in BBL, assistant coach to Delhi Capitals’ men’s team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and head coach of the Delhi Capitals’ owner-part-owned Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC).

After having had immense success with the Australian women’s national cricket team, winning three T20 World Cups and one ODI World Cup between 2018 and 2022, Mott moved to coaching the men's team and had immediate success, taking England men’s to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2022.

However, after the 2022 T20 World Cup, England did badly in every tournament, which led to Mott being shown the door after the T20 World Cup 2024 exit.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women's team. I've had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on,” Mott said in the official statement by Sixers Women.

"Having coached a number of players in the current squad, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with them - as well as working with some of the younger talent - as we push to secure another WBBL title," he added.
