Maxwell Out Of New Zealand Tour, In Doubt For India T20Is After Freak Training Injury

Maxwell fractured his forearm after a training accident

Freak injuries continue to haunt Glenn Maxwell as in a fresh blow, the 36-year-old has fractured his forearm a day before the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in a freak accident.

Maxwell was bowling in the nets to the big-hitting Mitch Owen when he copped a nasty blow on his wrist. The severity of the blow has instantly ruled him out of the T20Is against New Zealand, and have put his participation in the five-match series against India next month in jeopardy.

"We're training under a marquee, so it's really echo-y and loud," Matthew Short said, recalling the incident.

"I saw (Owen) smoked it and then the aftermath – it hit Maxi on the wrist. It didn't sound good.

"(Owen) is not the guy you want to be bowling to in T20 training, that's for sure.

"Maxi's been there and gone through that (serious injuries) a couple of times now – he was a bit disappointed but it's just like any other injury. I'm sure he'll get through it."

It’s a disappointing blow for Maxwell, who has been in stellar touch recently. He guided Australia over the line in the deciding game of the three-match T20I series against South Africa in August, and, two weeks ago, smashed a century for Victoria in a One-day Cup encounter against Queensland.

Cricket Australia have announced that wicketkeeper Josh Philippe will replace Maxwell for the New Zealand tour. Phillipe recently featured in the unofficial Test series between India A and Australia A, where he even struck a century.

All three games between Australia and New Zealand will be played in Mount Maunganui, with the series starting tomorrow (October 1).
