On August 18 (Sunday), Cricket Australia confirmed that the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host a special one-off Test between Australia and England to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of Test cricket.
It will be like the Centenary Test of 1977 that was played between the two sides, which Australia won by a margin of 45 runs. Alongside that, the cricketing board has also confirmed Melbourne, Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), and Adelaide Oval will be Test regulars, with their slots confirmed.
While MCG will host the yearly Boxing Day Test, SCG will take care of the New Year’s Test. Adelaide Oval, meanwhile, is guaranteed for a pre-Christmas slot. The Optus Stadium in Perth will host the Test openers for the next three seasons, leaving Gabba’s future in muddled water.
"In Brisbane it is harder [to plan] because of the infrastructure," Cricket Australia’s chair Baird said.
"There is just uncertainty, so we're not sure of the long-term solution. What we do know is the Gabba has a use for life that ends in 2030. We need a solution, and are working with the AFL as well on a long-term solution."
Meanwhile, it is also confirmed that Queensland will host at least one white-ball fixture every year, while South Australia is earmarked to host the marquee 'Day-night' fixture.
