MI bank on 29-run final over to hand CSK their first defeat of IPL 2019

MI overcome CSK hurdle to notch their second win of the IPL 2019

29 runs off the final over of the Mumbai Indians (MI) innings turned out to be too much for Chennai
Super Kings (CSK) as the hosts went on to hand the Men in Yellow their first loss of the season by 37
runs. In the initial stages of the match, it was CSK, who were on top, getting rid of Quinton de Kock
for 4, Rohit Sharma for just 13, followed by Yuvraj Singh for 4. However, it was Suryakumar Yadav,
who played a composed knock and kept the scoreboard ticking. Yadav and Krunal Pandya stitched
together a 62-run stand off 49 balls to set a decent platform for MI, giving them the license to finish
off on a high. Despite the fact Yadav was dismissed for 59 off 43 in the 18 th over, MI managed to
score 45 off the final two overs to put MI in a commanding position at the break.
Jason Behrendroff and Lasith Malinga got MI to an excellent start, getting rid of Ambati Rayudu for a
first-ball duck and also dismissed Shane Watson for just 5. Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav tried to
resurrect the innings, but the former had to depart thanks to a brilliant catch from Kieron Pollard in
the deep. MI seemed to have a spring in their step from there on, but MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav
weathered the storm and strung an impressive partnership. However, it was Jadhav who did bulk of
the scoring and it was Hardik Pandya, who eventually brought the 54-run stand to an end. Pandya
managed to get rid of Ravindra Jadeja too in the same over and from there, it was just Jadhav and
Dwayne Bravo, who were standing in MI’s way.
With 66 required from the final 4 overs, sans Dhoni, was always going to be a tough ask. But MI put
in a professional performance in those overs and closed the game out without any major hiccups.

Momentum Shift

When MI were batting, 29 runs were scored of the last over by Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard MI’s winning probability saw a 18 % increase from 43 to 61%.

In the second innings CSK lost three wickets in the powerplay and with that CSK’s winning probability saw a huge decline from 37 % during the mid innings to 17 %.
