MI lose six in six, KL’s ton in 100th, Karthik’s late flourish, Umran’s 3-wicket maiden in the 20th

Here are a few noteworthy stats from the four matches, Match 26, 27, 28 & 29 of the third weekend of IPL 2022

Rahul enthralls Brabourne with a Saturday blockbuster

In his 100th appearance in the Indian Premier League, the skipper of the Lucknow Super Giants, KL Rahul, smashed a scintillating century off 60 deliveries to power the team to an emphatic 18-run win against the five-time champions.

En route to his match-defining knock, the 29-year old breached the milestone of scoring the most runs by a player in their 100th appearance in the tournament.

Rahul also joined an elite list of players to score multiple centuries against the same opposition. Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and David Warner are the other three players to achieve this feat.

Rahul breaches 3.5k mount

The right-handed batter has been one of the most consistent in the extravaganza in the past couple of years. Heading into his 100th IPL match, Rahul had scored 3405 runs at an average of 46.

In his sublime knock of unbeaten 103, Rahul became the fastest player in the tournament to breach the 3500-run mark. While Rahul took only 91 innings to get past the milestone, Chris Gayle in the second position had achieved the feat in 95 innings.

Mumbai Indians torrid run

Things are going bad to worse for the Mumbai Indians as the five-time champions succumbed to their sixth successive defeat, making it only the third instance of a team starting the IPL campaign with six losses. Delhi Capitals, then known as Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore, endured a similar start in 2013 and 2019, respectively.

Tymal Mills horrific day with the ball

In the absence of Jofra Archer this season, Mumbai Indians banked heavily on Tymal Mills to partner Jasprit Bumrah and shoulder the responsibility of the side at the death. However, the left-arm pacer has struggled in this edition and conceded 54 runs in his three-over spell against Lucknow at an economy rate of 18 runs per over.

Among players with a minimum of three overs, his economy rate was the worst for a Mumbai bowler. Previously, Alzarri Joseph conceded 53 runs in his three-over spell at an economy rate of 17.9 against Rajasthan Royals in 2019, which was the worst then.

Mustafizur taken apart

The boys from Bengaluru were struggling at 132 for five after 17 overs after being asked to bat first against Delhi Capitals. While Delhi looked in control until this point, Dinesh Karthik had other ideas. The right-handed batter smashed Mustafizur Rahman for 28 runs in the 18th over to launch an attack at the bank end of the innings.

The onslaught against Mustafizur was the worst for a Delhi bowler in an over in the IPL. Previously, Rahul Shukla had conceded 27 runs against RCB in 2014. To add more to his agonies, those 28 runs are the most runs scored in an over against the Fizz in T20s.

Highest sixth-wicket stand

After tottering at 92 for five in the 12th over, Shahbaz Ahmed and Dinesh Karthik steadied the innings and forged a crucial stand of 97 runs for the sixth wicket, the third-highest sixth-wicket stand in the IPL. Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard smashed 122* against RCB in 2012, which is the highest.

Masterclass from Dinesh Karthik

One of the talking points in this edition has been the performance of Dinesh Karthik and his ability to finish the game. In this edition, Dinesh Karthik has scored 197 runs at a strike rate of 209.6, a testimony of how good he has been.

The wicket-keeper batter smashed an unbeaten 66 off 34 deliveries studded with five boundaries and five sixes to record the third-highest score by a number seven or lower batsman in the IPL. Andre Russell's blistering knock of 88* against Chennai in 2018, acquires the top spot.

David Warner's consistent form against RCB

In pursuit of 190 runs, David Warner started the run chase in an emphatic fashion to lay a solid foundation for Delhi. The southpaw smashed 66 off 38 deliveries before being adjudged plumb in front of Wanindu Hasanranga.

En route to his half-century, Warner recorded his 10th 50+ score against the Bengaluru based franchise, the second-most by a player against any opposition. He has smashed 11 scores of over 50 against Punjab Kings, which is the most by a player.

Punjab's struggle at the death

With Umran Malik dismantling the Kings by scalping a three-wicket maiden in the last over of the innings, the Kings managed to post only 151 runs in the first innings.

Despite laying a solid foundation in the first 15 overs of the innings, Punjab failed to launch an attack in the last five overs, scoring only 29 for the loss of six wickets, the second-worst score by them in the IPL in the last five. In 2013, they scored 22 for six against Chennai, which is their lowest.

The king of Powerplay

One of the most lethal swing bowlers in the world, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, etched his name in the record books to pick up the most wickets inside the first six overs of the innings.

The right-arm pacer scalped the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan to get his tally to 54 wickets, surpassing the previous best of 53 by Sandeep Sharma.

Umran Malik dismantles Punjab

Umran Malik achieved a rare feat in the final over of the innings as he bowled a maiden and scalped three wickets to halt Punjab's charge. His exploits in the 20th over helped join an elite list of bowlers.

Only two bowlers prior to this game, Jaydev Unadkat and Lasith Malinga, have bowled a wicket-maiden in the 20th over. While the left-arm pacer, playing for the Rising Pune Super Giants, recorded this feat against Hyderabad in 2017, Malinga derailed the Deccan Chargers side in 2009 with his heroics. However, five runs were conceded of Malinga's over courtesy of 1 leg bye and four leg byes. Irfan Pathan in 2008 for Punjab (Kings XI) had registered a maiden without a wicket in the last over against Mumbai.

The killer-miller show

The devastating power of David Miller in the IPL, is a well-known to everyone. Let be his century against Bangalore in 2013 or his finishing skills in the 2014 edition of the IPL. However, his art of finishing the matches was somewhere lost in recent times.

But, in his match against Chennai Super Kings, his destructive power set the stage ablaze. Coming into bat in the fourth over at a score of 16/3, Miller amassed an unbeaten knock of 94 from 51 to drive Gujarat Titans to their fifth win. His unbeaten score of 94 is the highest for a number four or lower batsman against Chennai in the IPL.

Jordan’s wretched run turns into a nightmare

For the second time in this edition of the IPL, Chris Jordan has failed to live-up to his reputation of being one of the best bowlers in the last five overs. In Chennai’s match against Sunrisers, when the latter team required 30 runs from 24 balls, Jordan came in and gave away 19 runs in the 17th.

In their match against Gujarat, the equation was even more conducive for a Chennai win as Gujarat required 48 from 18 balls. But, he came in the 18th over and conceded 25 runs and an extra 13 in the last over. He ended his spell at 0/58 in 3.5 overs, which is the joint-second most runs conceded by a Chennai bowler in the IPL.
