100, 56, 47, 112, 5 & 38, there was a lot of hope on Tilak Varma, who was set to make his One-Day Cup debut for Hampshire, on August 5 (Tuesday). However, the Mumbai Indians batter didn’t trouble the scorers much in the clash against Glamorgan, getting out for a three-ball duck.
Earlier in the clash, Ali Orr and Nick Gubbins gave Hampshire a steady start, scoring 68 runs for the first wicket in 13.4 overs. The stage was set for Tilak to carry on that attacking momentum, but the left-hander was brilliantly squared up in his first over at the crease by Ned Leonard.
The ball pitched on the middle and leg-stump just moved enough to take the outside edge, and for the longest time, it seemed like it would evade the slip fielder, Asa Tribe. However, Tribe pulled out a two-handed full-length dive to send back Varma for a three-ball duck.
Varma might have gone for a duck on his One-Day Cup debut, but he will get a lot of opportunities later on to overturn his fortunes.
