Mitchell Marsh “out of the World Cup” for "personal reasons" indefinitely

With Marsh now being ruled out, Steve Smith will return to his preferred No.3 position, with Marnus Labuschange batting at No.4

In what has come as a huge blow to Australia, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has returned home amidst the ICC Cricket World Cup in India, with no certainty about his return. With Glenn Maxwell being confirmed to sit out of the England clash due to concussion, losing Marsh is a big blow to the five-time champions, who will now have to rely on Marcus Stoinis or Cameron Green to bowl their full quota of overs.

"Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh has returned home from the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 late last night for personal reasons," Cricket Australia said in a statement.

"A timeline on his return to the squad is to be confirmed. No further detail will be offered at this time."

On Tuesday, Glenn Maxwell suffered a freak injury after a golf cart mishap which ruled him out of Australia's World Cup match against England on Saturday. Even though Marcus Stoinis is now fit and ready to return to the Australian XI, instead of that being a positive news, it has caused more headaches to the management, who will have to worry about a combination that provides maximum output.

However, with Marsh now being ruled out, Steve Smith will return to his preferred No.3 position, with Marnus Labuschagne batting at No.4. While batting will be thin along the way, Australia will aim to resurrect it with Travis Head and David Warner seeming to be in great touch.

With four wins from six matches, Australia currently sit at the third position on the points table.
