Mitchell Owen couldn’t have asked for a better start to his T20I career for Australia. Batting at No. 6, the 23-year-old hammered a 27-ball 50 to help Australia chase down a target of 190 in the first T20I against West Indies in Jamaica on July 20 (Sunday).
West Indies were cruising at 182/4 in 17.2 overs but could only manage seven runs in the remaining 16 deliveries, losing four wickets in the process. Thanks to that collapse, Australia managed to restrict them to under 200.
In the second innings, skipper Mitchell Marsh (24 off 17), Josh Inglis (18 off 8), and Glenn Maxwell (11 off 10) got starts, but Australia kept losing wickets and were reduced to 79/4 in 9 overs. That’s when Cameron Green (51 off 26) and Owen added 80 runs for the fifth wicket.
Owen smoked six maximums - three of those came in a single over from Akeal Hosein. In the process, he became only the third Australian to score a fifty on T20I debut. Australia chased down the target with seven deliveries to spare and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) roped in the 23-year-old as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who was ruled out due to an injury. In his only match of the competition against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Owen was dismissed for a two-ball duck.
