Daryl Mitchell hit a superb 190 as New Zealand put up a first innings score of 553 all out while Ollie Pope led England's fightback with an unbeaten 51 on the second day of the second Test at Trent Bridge.
Tom Blundell contributed to the visitors' total with 106 as he and Mitchell shared a 236-run stand for the fifth wicket. Debutant Michael Bracewell scored a brisk 49 at the end.
After losing Zak Crawley early, England ended the day at 90/1 after Pope and Alex Lees (34 not out) saw out the day without further hiccups.
Beginning the day 318/4, Mitchell took advantage of a dropped chance and survived an lbw appeal to score his second Test century in 318 balls, which included 23 fours and four sixes.
After putting down multiple catches on the opening day, England fielders were guilty of dropping three catches. Blundell then brought up his third Test hundred with a single off Jack Leach, but was soon dismissed by the left-arm spinner when he lofted it to Stokes at mid-off.
Rain came to England's rescue, halting the game before Bracewell put Potts to the sword with a flurry of boundaries. The 31-year added 91 runs with Mitchell before Joe Root caught him in the slips off Anderson.
Stuart Broad cleaned up Kyle Jamieson (14) and Tim Southee (4) in the same over as Trent Boult added 33 runs for the final wicket before Mitchell returned as the final wicket.
With six runs on the board, Boult produced a sensational delivery that took a thick edge off Crawley that carried to the keeper. Southee got Lees to edge a seaming delivery but Mitchell fumbled the ball in the slips as England held on till the end of the day.
