It was a superb day for the players from Punjab Kings (PBKS) as they played a huge role in their teams' victory during the Major League (MLC) action on July 4 (Friday). In the first match of the day, the San Francisco Uniorns (SFU) broke their two-match losing streak, with a closely-fought one-run win over Texas Super Kings (TSK) in Lauderhill.
In that game, it was Matthew Short, who was part of PBKS in 2023, who played a superb innings, slamming 80 off 63 deliveries to lead the Unicorns to 148/6. With this knock, Short becomes the leading run-getter in MLC 2025 with 353 runs in six innings, which includes as many as five fifties. For the Super Kings, Marcus Stoinis, the PBKS all-rounder, was the pick of the bowlers with 3/32.
Needing 13 off the final over, Xavier Bartlett, who played for PBKS for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year, held his nerve to hand his side a victory by the barest of margins. The Australia pacer has 16 wickets this season, the most after Haris Rauf (17).
The Super Kings had a chance to go top of the table, but are now are third with 12 points, with Unicorns leading the way with 14.
In the second match of the day, Glenn Maxwell, who had a poor IPL season with turned it around with the ball, picking up 3/12 to bundle out Seattle Orcas for just 82. Maxwell, who is leading Washington Freedom in the tournament, has six wickets to his name in MLC 2025, and with the bat, he has slammed 235 runs at a strike rate of 192.62, including a century in eight innings.
