Yashasvi Jaiswal has been on the receiving end of criticism for his fielding ever since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He dropped several chances and the lapse in catching abilities has continued even during India’s tour of England in 2025, where he dropped three catches in the first Test alone.
Mohammad Kaif, one of the greatest fielders that India has seen, finally dissected the reason behind Jaiswal’s poor catching. He said that it is not like Jaiswal is a poor fielder, but it is his style and the use of straps on his fingers that has led to those dropped catches.
“Why is Yashasvi Jaiswal dropping catches? We are practising with Duke’s ball, and when we get hurt, we put on a strap. In such a situation, the fingers are stuck and there is no free movement,” Indian Express quoted Kaif as explaining on his YouTube channel.
"You can’t hold onto the catch because the strap becomes a sponge. The ball bounces off it, so that’s the drawback. The natural connection with the ball shouldn’t be lost,” added the former India player.
Jaiswal dropped catches of Ollie Pope and Harry Brook in England’s first innings and of Ben Duckett in the second in the Test at Headingley, which India lost, despite setting a target as stiff as 372 in the fourth innings. All three players were the reason behind England’s win.
